KCRS (Kinini Cooperative Rusiga Sector) is an all-female co-op of coffee farmers based in the Rulindo district of North Rwanda. The co-op was established to support widows and orphans whose lives were devastated by the Rwandan genocide in the 1990s.
85% of the farmers that make up the KCRS Womens' Cooperative have farms 2000 metres above sea level. They produce a diverse range of crops including legumes, beans and sweet potatoes in between the coffee trees to provide crop diversity and use the land efficiently. These crops allow their income to be spread across all seasons and provides food for the cooperative to consume themselves, within their communities. The cooperative is made up of 12 groups, close to the villages, making training and travelling easier for the women, whom are now expert farmers and coffee growers in their own right.
The support that the smallholder farmers rely on has been shown to flourish under this structure, and the coffee produced by KCRS really showcases this. It is beautifully complex, creamy, bright and floral; faithfully representing the balance and flavour of Rwandan coffee.
